Winchester WST Smokeless Gun Powder: Low-Flash Target Shotshell and Competition Pistol Powder

Winchester WST (Winchester Super Target) is a low-flash, low-smoke spherical powder built for target shooters who need clean, consistent performance. Winchester has built smokeless propellants since the late 1800s, and WST carries that same reputation for quality into the reloading bench. It’s an excellent target shotshell and standard-velocity handgun propellant, giving trap, skeet, and competition pistol shooters a single versatile powder for the bench.

Low-Flash, Low-Smoke Target Performance

WST’s spherical granules meter smoothly through powder measures and shotshell loading presses, supporting the consistent charge weights that target shooting demands. Its low flash and low smoke signature keeps sight pictures clear on the clays course, while its standard-velocity pressure curve suits target and competition loads rather than magnum-class applications.

Application Versatility

WST performs well in 12 gauge target shotshell loads and .45 ACP competition handgun loads. If you’re comparing options in the target shotshell class, Ramshot Competition is a strong low-recoil alternative, while Winchester WSF offers a similar dual-purpose option within the Winchester lineup for reloaders who also load 9mm and .40 S&W.

Load Development

Always use published, manufacturer-tested load data when developing loads with WST, whether loading shotshells or handgun ammunition. Start at the published minimum charge and work up in small increments, weigh every charge on a calibrated scale, and chronograph each string to find the most consistent load. Keep your components — hull, wad, shot charge, or primer, bullet, and brass lot — constant during development, and document your results so successful loads can be reproduced.
