Winchester 748 Smokeless Gun Powder: Modern, Clean-Burning Rifle Propellant

Winchester 748 is a spherical (ball) rifle powder with a mid-range burn rate, best known as a top choice for .223 Remington. Its low-flame-temperature chemistry helps extend barrel life compared to other powders of similar burn speed, and its controlled granule geometry produces even metering and predictable burn behavior on electronic and mechanical powder measures alike.

Clean-Burning, Meter-Friendly Design

Winchester 748’s spherical granules flow predictably through powder measures, supporting consistent charge weights load after load. Its low-flame-temperature formulation reduces throat erosion and extends barrel life relative to other powders in its burn-rate class, while its stable pressure curve performs consistently across a range of bullet weights.

Application Versatility

Winchester 748 is a genuine rifle powder — not a pistol propellant — and is the go-to choice for .223 Remington, with additional applications in .222 Remington, .30-30 Winchester, and other rifle cartridges ranging up to .458 Winchester Magnum. If you’re comparing options in the mid-burn-rate rifle powder class, Winchester 760 is a slower-burning alternative suited to larger-capacity magnum cartridges, while Winchester StaBall Match offers a match-grade option for precision rifle shooters.

Load Development

Always use published, manufacturer-tested load data when developing rifle loads with Winchester 748. Start at the published minimum charge and work up in small increments, weigh every charge on a calibrated scale, and chronograph each string to find the most consistent load. Keep your primer brand, bullet lot, and brass lot constant during development, watch for pressure signs, and document charge weight, seating depth, primer, and chronograph results so successful loads can be reproduced.
